Program Note

In a clear ABA form, Cellimba Fusions I was composed for an untraditional instrumentation: two cellos and two marimbas, hence the title “Cellimba”, a compilation of both words. The two instruments from different instrumental families share similar registers but have very different playing techniques, traditions, and timbral vocabularies. The goal of the piece is to explore timbral and textural possibilities of the instrumental combination using minimalistic approach, and to discover the potential of how performance techniques of both instruments can influence and interact with each other.
